PEG/GJ Tube Insertion

A PEG tube insertion is a procedure in which a tube in inserted through the abdominal wall into the stomach. A GJ tube insertion is a procedure in which a tube is inserted through the abdominal wall into the stomach with the tip advancing into the small bowel. These feeding tubes should be changed regularly every three months.

Reasons for the Procedure

  • PEG/GJ tube placement is necessary to provide nutrition to a patient when he/she is unable to feed adequately by mouth to stay healthy or is unable to swallow correctly.
  • PEG/GJ tubes can also be used to deliver medications to the patient.
