Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an airway treatment that utilizes special drugs along with light to destroy cancer cells. This unique therapy is designed to utilize light energy to activate an intravenous injected medication which initiates a chemical reaction that causes the destruction of tumor cells. The period of time between when the drug is administered and when the light is applied can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

Reasons for the Procedure

  • PDT destroys cancer cells by activating the light energy and creating free radicals, which are lethal to cancer cells.

Benefits of PDT

  • This procedure decreases the size of cancer cells and in some cases results in complete resolution of the tumor.
  • PDT is less invasive than a surgical option for treatment.
  • Unlike radiation, PDT can be given numerous times to the same site.
