Thoracentesis/Paracentesis

Thoracentesis (“chest tap”) is a procedure in which the physician uses a fine need to remove excess fluid from the lungs. Paracentesis (“belly tap”) is a procedure in which the physician uses a fine needle to remove excess fluid from around the abdomen. The removed fluids can then be diagnostically tested. Removal of the fluids may also be done to relieve pressure or help a patient breathe easier.
