Percutaneous Tracheostomy

Percutaneous Tracheostomy

Percutaneous tracheostomy is a procedure in which the physician makes a small opening in a patient’s neck which allows access to the trachea. This keeps the airway passage open and provides access to remove secretions along with providing a passageway for mechanical ventilation.

Reasons for the Procedure

  • Patients with extended respiratory failure or any other condition resulting in the inability to breathe are appropriate for percutaneous tracheostomy.

Benefits of Percutaneous Tracheostomy

  • Percutaneous tracheostomy provides the patient with smaller skin incisions, lower infection rate and less tissue trauma.
